Imagine my surprise when I came home from work one freezing cold evening and found water flooding my basement. I ran to turn off the water and then I called the plumber. Even though it was late in the evening, the plumber immediately came to my house and fixed the busted water line. The plumber told me that I could have prevented my water line from freezing and busting if I had winterized the pipes. After researching various methods, I insulated the pipes so they won't freeze again. My name is Joel Hampton and this blog is about the different ways to winterize your plumbing pipes to keep them from freezing. Coming home to a basement filled with water is a nightmare and I hope that after reading the information in my blog, it won't happen to you.
As the weather starts to get warmer, many people are tempted to turn on their AC to cool the house down. Although, this will make you feel comfortable, it can also be expensive. The amount of money that you spend in your AC may not be necessary. There are a couple things that you can do to keep yourself cool in the hotter months without blasting your AC. Here are a couple tips.
1. Cook Outside
If you love to cook this may be difficult for you. When you use the oven it will heat up the house. This means that just throwing in a batch of cookies, could cost you more money on your AC bill. This is why it is best if you can to minimize your cooking, and try to cook outside. Many people invest in a BBQ grill. The amount that you pay on the grill will pay for itself over time. This is because when you heat with a grill you use propane or coals, not electricity. So you save on your electric bill and the heat stays outside instead of warming up your house.
2. Cool Yourself Down
Don't fall into the misconception of thinking that if you are hot you need to cool down the entire house. Instead, you just need to get yourself cool. This can be done by getting yourself a cold drink, using an ice pack, removing a layer of clothing and so much more. Many people live in climates where the weather is hot, but they are able to keep themselves cool. This is because they have learned the art of cooling the body down, without cooling the whole house. This will keep your comfortable and keep money in your pocket.
3. Use Those Ceiling Fans
If you don't already have ceiling fans in your house, now is the time to get them. A ceiling fan is one of the best ways to circulate air throughout the house for pennies. In fact, you can power a ceiling fan for less that 2 cents an hour. That is a significant difference from the amount that you would pay to keep your AC on that entire time.
Thus, you can turn the AC on for a short while to get the house cooled, then turn off the AC and get the ceiling fans going. This will give you the same feeling of AC without costing you the money.
By doing these simple things you can stay cool and save money.
